Speak What We Feel: Growth in Creation

The COVID-19 pandemic brought most theatre and entertainment in Michigan to a grinding halt; but as businesses slowly reopened, several theatres in Metro Detroit began experimenting on ways to create new theatre and make it accessible to their communities.

This month on Speak What We Feel, we are joined by artistic directors Krista Schafer Ewbank from Open Book Theatre and Emilio Rodriguez from Black & Brown Theatre. Both artists experimented with different mediums of performance during the pandemic to continue creating content and engaging their audiences. From short plays performed for residents in their driveway, to virtual theatre on Zoom, to filming and streaming plays online, Krista and Emilio each found ways for their theatre to create new theatre content and make it accessible to their communities. We chat with Krista and Emilio about what inspired the different projects they made for their theatre, the challenges and benefits of incorporating new media into theatre, and more!
